Self-exploration saves lives
Breast cancer is the most common with over 2.2 million cases during 2020 and the leading cause of cancer death worldwide, approximately 685,000 women have died as a result of this disease in the past year; most of these deaths take place in low and middle-income countries, reflecting the lack of health care and not enough information available.
These are the most common symptoms and signs for breast cancer:
1. Nodule or thickening in the breast
2. Alteration in the size, shape or appearance of the breast
3. Appearance of dimples, redness, cracks or other alteration in the skin
4. Changes in the appearance of the nipple or alteration in the areola
5. Abnormal nipple discharge
Reduce breast cancer risk:
1. If possible, practice prolonged breastfeeding
2. Exercise regularly
3. Keep a healthy weight
4. Avoid excessive alcohol consumption
5. Try not to expose yourself to tobacco smoke
6. Do not use hormones for a long time
7. Do not expose yourself excessively to radiation
This disease is not exclusive to women, approximately 0.5-1% of breast cancer cases affect men, and the treatment for both is the same. The best prevention is early detection and effective therapies based on surgery, radiotherapy and pharmacotherapy. Self-exploration is self-love.
